Patrick Mkhize was born in 1960 and grew up in Bulwer, a rural area of Natal. He moved to Durban and met Steve Biko in 1975, who introduced him to the ideas of the Black Consciousness Movement. He attended University of Durban-Westville as a law student, where he was active in the Student Representative Council. Mkhize was detained five times, starting in 1979 when he was 19. He was active in the unions and with the National Council of Trade Unions and participated in the Azanian Peoples’ Organization (AZAPO), which was formed after the Black Consciousness organizations were banned in 1977.
